The alga accumulates astaxanthin as a protective molecule against oxidative stress.

This pigment is one of the most powerful natural antioxidants known, widely used in aquaculture (salmon, shrimp), nutraceuticals, cosmetics and human health. It shows strong anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and photoprotective properties.
