YAS 2026 returns to Wageningen, spotlighting the next generation of algae innovators
The Young Algaeneers Symposium (YAS) will return from 26 to 29 May 2026 at Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in the Netherlands, bringing together early-career scientists, students, and innovators working across the algae value chain for four days of research exchange, networking, and collaboration. The event marks the symposium’s 10th edition, underscoring its growing role in Europe’s algae ecosystem.
Organised as a meeting “made by and for” young scientists and entrepreneurs in the microalgae and seaweed sectors, YAS has built a reputation for blending academic discussion with industry relevance. According to the official event pages, the symposium is designed for Master’s students, PhD candidates, postdocs, and young professionals within their first five years in the algae field, with a strong focus on participation, peer learning, and community-building.
This year’s edition is expected to cover a wide range of themes, from bioprocess optimization and bioactive compounds to algae physiology, genetic engineering, circular bioeconomy, and sustainability, reflecting the breadth of current algae research and commercial applications. The programme also includes Young Algaeneer Talks, poster sessions, working groups, an innovation competition, and a YAS alumni roundtable, alongside social activities aimed at strengthening links across labs, startups, and institutions.
A notable feature of YAS 2026 is its connection to the Wageningen innovation landscape. The published programme highlights site visits and workshops, including activities linked to AlgaePARC/Algreen, as well as a scheduled visit to Lgem on the final day. The event also lists invited speakers such as Maria Barbosa (WUR), Julie Zedler (Jena University), and Alexander Mathys (ETH Zurich), reinforcing the symposium’s mix of scientific depth and practical relevance.
EABA - the European Algae Biomass Association - has publicly celebrated YAS’s continued momentum, noting the sustained commitment around the symposium after a decade of activity. That milestone matters: in a fast-moving sector shaped by food innovation, biotechnology, marine science, and the blue bioeconomy, YAS continues to act as a launchpad for the next wave of algae talent.
Registration is open through the official YAS channels, with the event registration page describing access to conference sessions, workshops, site visits, food, and social activities as part of the core ticket.
